Open-source AI coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains, the terminal and desktop
Cline is an open-source AI coding agent. It reads a project, edits files across it and runs terminal commands. Each file edit and command waits for your approval, unless you turn on auto-approve. In Plan mode it explores the code and proposes a strategy; in Act mode it carries the plan out. It supports MCP servers, .clinerules files, skills, multi-agent teams and scheduled runs.
It runs as an extension for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VSCodium and Antigravity, a plugin for JetBrains IDEs, a CLI for the terminal and CI/CD, a desktop app (beta) for macOS, Windows and Linux, and an SDK. Cloud Agents work on GitHub repos from a browser.
The extension and CLI are free under the Apache 2.0 licence. You pay only for AI models: bring your own API key (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter and others), use local models with Ollama or LM Studio, buy pay-as-you-go Cline credits, or subscribe to ClinePass for open-weight models at $9.99/month (USD). Enterprise pricing is custom.
Individual developers and engineering teams who want an AI coding agent in their editor, terminal or desktop, with a free choice of AI model. The Enterprise plan is for companies that need SSO, role-based access and central billing.
Open source (Apache 2.0); the extension is free and you bring your own API key or a local model.
Works inside the editor you already use (VS Code, JetBrains, Windsurf and more) instead of a separate editor.
