iA Writer is a writing app for plain text with Markdown. You write in the editor and see the styled text in Preview. Focus Mode fades everything except the sentence or paragraph you are working on. Style Check marks fillers, clichés and redundancies, and runs on your device. Authorship shows which text you typed and which text you pasted, including text from AI.
It runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and iPad. Documents are files in a local folder or in iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive. You can export to HTML, PDF and Word (.docx), import Word files, and on Mac, iPhone and iPad post drafts to WordPress, Ghost, Medium and Micro.blog.
Prices are one-time payments per platform, in USD: Mac $49.99, Windows $29.99, iPhone and iPad $49.99 (App Store only). Mac and Windows have a 7-day free trial and a 20% education discount when bought from iA. The maker says iA Writer launched in 2010 and has helped over two million writers (writer page).
Writers who want to focus on the words, not on formatting. The maker's guides address novelists, academic writers, screenwriters, bloggers and anyone who writes in Markdown.
Also runs on Windows and is a one-time payment per platform (Mac US$49.99); Ulysses is a subscription or a US$199.99 perpetual licence.
Costs US$49.99 on Mac versus US$59.99, keeps documents as plain Markdown files in a folder you choose, and shows which text was typed, pasted or written by AI.
