Medium is an online platform where anyone can write and publish stories and articles, and read what others write. You can publish a story as soon as you finish writing it, with no approval step. Readers follow writers and topics, clap, highlight, reply and save stories to lists. Writers can submit stories to publications or create their own.
It runs in the cloud, on the web and in apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. Medium shows no ads and is funded by members. Reading and writing are free. Medium Member costs $5 a month or $50 a year: member-only stories, audio versions of stories, offline reading, a custom domain and your own publications. Friend of Medium costs $15 a month or $150 a year and adds more pay for writers and access to TK, a writing app from Medium.
In the Partner Program, writers earn part of member fees when members read their member-only stories. Payment goes through Stripe. Medium says over 100 million people use it every month (about page).
Anyone with a story or knowledge to share, such as software developers, amateur novelists, product designers and CEOs, and readers who want long, thoughtful stories without ads. The Partner Program is for writers who want to earn from their stories.
Writers can earn a share of member fees through the Partner Program without running their own paid subscription, and Medium shows no ads.
Free to read and write with nothing to host or install, and has apps for iPhone, iPad and Android; Ghost(Pro) starts at $15 per month.
