Audacity is a multi-track audio editor and recorder. You record from a microphone, then cut, copy, trim, split and arrange clips on tracks. It has per-track meters, markers and a loop range. It imports and exports common audio formats such as WAV, MP3, FLAC and Ogg. An optional FFmpeg library adds WMA, M4A, AC3 and more.
Built-in effects include noise reduction, compressor, limiter, graphic EQ, reverb, delay, and pitch and speed changers. Whisper speech transcription runs on your own computer. It supports VST3 and Nyquist plugins, and has a Spectrogram view and Vamp analyzers. Audacity 4 (current version 4.0.1) brings a new interface with workspaces, themes and clip colors.
It runs locally on Windows, macOS and Linux, on x86_64 and ARM64 (ARM64 builds have no plugin support). It is free and open source under the GPLv3, made by Muse Group and contributors. With an audio.com account you can save projects to the cloud and share them. The maker states 100M+ downloads since 2000.
