Open-source software for building websites and blogs and publishing content
WordPress is open-source software for building websites and blogs. You lay out posts and pages in the block editor, add media, and publish at once or on a schedule. It has drafts, revisions, user roles, built-in comments and importers from Blogger, Tumblr and other tools. Themes change the design and plugins add features: the official directories list 8,707 themes and over 75,000 free plugins.
You install it on your own web server or hosting account. WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or greater and MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.11 or greater. Many hosting companies also offer it ready to install. WordPress Playground lets you try it in the browser.
The software is free, released under the GPLv2 (or later) licence. The current version is 7.1 (August 2026; latest update 7.1.3), which adds responsive styles per screen size, a new image crop tool and notes with @mentions. Developers extend it with hooks, custom post types and the REST API. It is available in more than 70 languages.
Anyone who wants to build a website, from first-time bloggers and creators to small businesses, enterprises and professional developers who build themes, plugins and applications on it.
Its official directories list over 75,000 free plugins and 8,707 themes, and it has apps for iOS and Android.
