Aider lets you work with a large language model (LLM) on your code from the terminal. You ask for a change in plain words, and Aider edits the files in your local git repo and commits each change with a commit message. It makes a map of the whole codebase, works with more than 100 programming languages, and can lint and test the code after each change and fix the problems it finds.
It has chat modes for code, ask, architect and help. You can also add AI comments in your own editor, talk to it by voice, add images and web pages to the chat, or use an experimental browser UI. It can copy code to and from an LLM web chat.
Aider is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 licence. It runs on your own computer (macOS, Windows and Linux, also in Docker) and connects to cloud LLMs such as Claude, DeepSeek and OpenAI models, or to local models. You pay the LLM provider for its use with your own API key.
Developers who want to pair program with an LLM in the terminal, to start a new project or to build on an existing codebase.
Free and open source under Apache 2.0, and works with any provider's API key or local models; Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan or API tokens.
Works with local models or your own key for Claude, DeepSeek, OpenAI and others; Gemini CLI no longer serves unpaid Google accounts since June 2026.
