GitHub's official MCP server that connects AI tools to GitHub
GitHub MCP Server is GitHub's official Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. It connects AI tools to GitHub, so agents and chat assistants can read repositories and code, manage issues and pull requests, check GitHub Actions runs and review security findings and Dependabot alerts.
It runs in two ways. The remote server is hosted by GitHub at api.githubcopilot.com/mcp and needs no local setup. The local server runs as a Docker image (ghcr.io/github/github-mcp-server) or as a binary built from source, and also works with GitHub Enterprise Server. Sign-in is by OAuth or a personal access token. Tools are grouped in toolsets that can be turned on or off, and there are read-only and lockdown modes.
The code is open source under the MIT license. GitHub's docs say the server is available to all GitHub users on any plan. Tools tied to paid features, such as Copilot coding agent, need the same paid subscription.
Developers who want to connect their AI tools (VS Code, Claude, Cursor, Windsurf and other MCP hosts) to GitHub, from simple questions in plain language to multi-step agent workflows.
Its code is open source (MIT) and it can run locally in Docker or as a binary, also against GitHub Enterprise Server; Linear's server is hosted only and its code is not published.
Its code is under the MIT licence, an OSI open source licence; Sentry MCP's code is under the Functional Source License, which bans competing commercial use.
Works with GitHub itself (issues, pull requests, Actions runs, security alerts) and is hosted by GitHub; the reference Git server only reads and changes a local Git repository.
Linear's official hosted MCP server for issues, projects and comments
Covers Linear's own planning objects: projects, milestones, releases and customer requests; Enterprise workspaces using Okta can manage access centrally.
Official reference MCP servers: Filesystem, Git, Fetch, Memory, Time and more
Works on local Git repositories and local files with no GitHub account, and includes Fetch, Memory, Time and Sequential Thinking servers.
Sentry's official MCP server that connects coding agents to Sentry
Gives issue details, stack traces and Seer root-cause analysis for errors from your running apps; GitHub's server covers code, issues, pull requests and Actions.
