Writing app for long texts such as novels, screenplays and theses
Scrivener is a writing app from Literature & Latte for long projects. You write in sections of any size, in any order, and Scrivener joins them into one manuscript. A binder keeps the draft, notes and research (PDFs, images, web pages, audio and video) in one project. It was first released in 2007.
Tools include a corkboard of index cards, an outliner, an editor with styles, comments and page view, and "Scrivenings" mode to edit many sections as one document. Compile exports the project to print, PDF, Word, RTF, Final Draft, ePub or Kindle ebook formats, and MultiMarkdown for LaTeX. It runs on macOS 11+, 64-bit Windows 10+ and iOS 11+; files sync between devices with Dropbox.
Prices on the US store (licences are sold per platform): macOS US$59.99, Windows US$59.99, macOS + Windows bundle US$95.98, educational licence US$50.99, iPhone and iPad US$23.99. A 30-day free trial is available for macOS and Windows.
Writers of all kinds, as the maker lists them: novelists, screenwriters, non-fiction writers, students, academics, lawyers, journalists and translators.
Sold as a one-time licence (macOS US$59.99) and also runs on Windows; Ulysses is a subscription (US$39.99 per year) or a US$199.99 perpetual licence and runs only on Apple devices.
